Andrew’s Friday Update v1.0
Posted by Andrew
What’s new in my world this week? (A collection of random updates, cool stuff I’ve found, and other random awesomeness.)
Virgin Megastore Closing Sale
I stopped by the Virgin over in Union Square just to see what kind of deals I could snag and came away very satisfied.
Over in the games section, all new games were 40% off original price. When the guy rang up my order it came out as:
Rock Band 2 $23.99
Halo Wars $35.99
FANTASTIC! Two new games for the price of one! I know these have been out for awhile but if you haven’t picked them up yet, nows a perfect time with this sale.
Angels & Demons & Bears, Oh my!
Okay, no bears. But I saw Angels & Demons this week and was pleasantly surprised there. Maybe it’s because my mind hasn’t been the same since finals, but I was pretty entertained by what was supposed to be a sub-par movie.
It has this kind of therapeutic feel to it if you enjoy mysteries and puzzles. I know a lot of it was out of the realm of reality and has this hokey feel to it, but if you can put that aside, it’s actually kind of neat.
Or maybe, it’s because my girlfriend made me visit all of these sites when we studied in Italy a year ago so there’s a certain nostalgia to it.
Working Half Time
So my internship is still in limbo. I’m still considered an intern even though I have graduated and finished classes.
What’s more is that I’m still on the regular intern limit of 20 hours a week.
It’s good and bad for me: good because now I have more free time to refocus, create content, and really get my life started; bad because I have less money coming in.
Hmmm, maybe it’s not so bad after all.
A marginal amount of money, or a good deal more freedom?
I’ll take the freedom, thank you very much.
DO NOT let old acquaintance be forgot
I spent some time this week getting in contact with old friends and catching up on the times. It’s one of those exercises that make you say, “Wow, I really do know a lot of people.”
What got me into that was this article from The Fluent Self, which emphasizes how important your social network is when getting a blog like this one off the ground. It’s about creating relationships with people and making sure that your network knows what you’re up to and how they can help you.
It sounds very manipulative, but if you just remember that it’s a two way street and treat it as any other friendship, it’s not that bad after all.
The twitter version: I get by with a little help from my friends. (I grew up with re-runs of the Wonder Years okay!)
Showing Gratitude
Chris Guillebeau over at The Art of Non Conformity has this running quote in his email updates:
“It’s a sign of mediocrity when you
demonstrate gratitude with moderation.”
-Roberto Benigni
That, plus the previous item from Havi, really got me excited about reaching out to all the cool folks that I look up to online. So I took 5 minutes and sent a quick personalized message to each of them about how each of them inspired me and changed my life.
I don’t know how this is going to pay off for me in the end, but for now, I’m trying to be remarkable and be super thankful to all those folks. Of course, if anything does happen, I’ll be sure to share it here.
What’s new in all of your worlds’? Anything interesting or awesome happen to you? Let me know in the comments.
